KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS SACRED HEART COUNCIL 6525 NEWSLETTER |
Dearest Lord, teach me to be generous. Teach me to serve You as You deserve; To give and not to count the cost; To fight and not to heed the wounds;
To toil and not to seek for rest; To labor and not to ask reward. Save that of knowing that I do your will, my God.
Brother Knights,
Welcome once again to our monthly newsletter. As most of you have heard, I was under the weather for few weeks back in March, and I want to thank everyone for their prayers, concern, and patience with, and for me while I was not up to speed. Yet, even though I am back to normal, I am still a little behind, but that is getting better also. Anyway, we have several items of business going on that we need to tend to. First off, our sympathy, and prayers go out to brother Bill Fischer and his family, at the loss of his son last month in a tragic accident. Also our sympathies go to the Roettger family especially Jill on the loss of our brother and her husband Gary. As well as the Mcarthy family on the loss of Joe's mother. We will be planning to have these families join us at the April meeting as we as a council offer a rosary for them, and their loved ones.
We will be exemplifying the first degree of the Knight of Columbus at the meeting April 20. We have several candidates ourselves, and I believe that Warrenton Council has a few that may join us as well. Hope to see you all there.
As I write this, the lenten fish fries have come to a close. Rob Kroupa will hopefully have a full report at the meeting to letting us know how well we did. Rob, Jerry and myself wish to thank everyone who helped out this year, and wish to especially thank those of you who made extra effort to attend every one of them. The help is always greatly appreciated, and needed.
April 30 will be our first fifth Sunday Communion breakfast this year. We are always looking for more people to be involved with assisting at the 8:00am Mass. If you would like to be in the line-up, call me, or John Boland for more information. Something else that has come up again, there is a fundraiser breakfast scheduled that same Sunday in the School cafeteria. Last August we voted to postpone our breakfast and attend the one at the school, mostly due to the fact that our facilities were in disarray from the flooring project. As for this time, we can discuss it at the meeting. I will however be sending letters to the parish and school, and meeting with several of the organizations to reach a mutual agreement on these fifth Sunday issues.
And lastly, we formed a small Charity Committee a few months ago to best use and disburse some of our funds. Todd Mack was in charge of that, and did a fine job. What I want to do is expand on that, make the committee larger, and permanent so that any donation request made to the council is first analyzed by this committee, and then presented to the council with their recommendation. I believe that this will make for smoother, and more efficient meetings.
The last thing to be thinking about is Officer nominations at the May Meeting. Think about yourself as an officer, all Third degree members qualify. And, it is only has hard as you make it, and only as positive as you make it.
Fraternally,
Randy Leitman, G.K.
As recorded by Chris Metze:
The Bill Douglas family was invited to dinner. Afterwards a rosary was prayed, led by brother Paul Orf, for Bill's mother who had recently passed away.
The regular meeting was opened at 7:10 pm with prayer, pledge of allegiance, and the singing of the opening ode. Roll call was then taken and minutes read and approved from the last meeting.
GK Randy Leitman reported that he had been recovering from an illness for the past couple of weeks and was running a little behind in council business. He made 2 presentations for knight of the month. Tino Garamella for January and Rob Kroupa for February. Families of the month are yet to be named. The monthly award for knight and family of the month will be brought up-to-date at the April meeting.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Jerry Heitman reported that the first fish fry was a record breaker with 686 meals served. The second fry was just a little over 600. The worker turnout has been good and he hopes that the help continues through the last fry.
Todd Mack reported on the charity committee. A new PRO-LIFE sign, sponsored by the council, has been installed. The sign is located between Highway C and Chubby's Restaurant and can be viewed heading south on Highway 61. The council is sponsoring the sign for one year and the ladies auxiliary will sponsor an additional year.
Mike Flynn was absent, but will make reports at the April meeting on ball diamond sign sales, the March 4 highway cleanup, and the Troy participant in the regional playoff in Monroe City.
The home association gave no report, but it was noticed by many that new, wood stained, restroom doors had been installed with closers, brass hardware, and permanent men and women signs complete with the handicap logo.
NEW BUSINESS:
Brother Joe Martin brought attention to the council that 4 knights in the Silex area had lost their homes, to a tornado, on March 12. He asked if we could offer some assistance. A motion was voted and approved to donate $500.00 from the charity fund. Joe also passed the hat and collected an additional $300.00 from the members present.
Lector John Soucy passed out some informative pamphlets. He also reported that the council is falling short on their commitment to provide one hour in the Eucharistic adoration chapel.
Field insurance agent C. J. Brown reported that general insurance agent Jim McCue has retired after 49 years of faithful service to the Order. C. J. has 3 candidates recruited for the first degree in April which will make our membership goal for the star council award.
Thanks to Judy Armistead for preparing the meal and dessert for this month's meeting. She is already making plans for next month's meal.
District Deputy Marvin Armistead reported that a second and third degree will be held in Palmyra on March 19. The Order will remember in prayer, on March 25, the unborn children as a result of abortion. On March 29 the Order will celebrate Founders Day marking 124 years of service to our church, our families, our communities, and to the less fortunate.
Prayers were offered for the sick and distressed, the closing ode was sung, and the meeting closed at 8:45pm.
THE NEXT MEETING IS THURSDAY APRIL 20, 2006
By Jason Bolte:
As of writing this month's column we are in the same spot we were last year with approximately 75 members still not paying dues. This is a reminder to those folks that they have until the end of this month to contact me or pay the dues to avoid further action. I want to thank those of you who have offered your assistance with the first degree and for stepping up to help out the Eucharistic adoration chapel coverage. I would encourage anyone who does not utilize this for their spiritual growth to try and commit an hour because the grace you receive as a result is indescribable. I would still like to see the squires reactivated in our Council and plan on contacting the individuals that showed an interest in helping out with this soon. I am really proud to be a member of this council and all the good work that we do. On that note at the next meeting I am going to talk to you about a special request that I received while attending the 4 th degree for some help for someone wanting to enter the religious life. I would appreciate your support on this as it is real important to me. As always if there is anything that you need or I can help you with do not hesitate to contact me.
Fraternally yours,
Jason Bolte

There is nothing new to report at this time.
APRIL MEETINGS ARE TUESDAY THE 11 h & 25 th WE MEET ON THE SECOND AND FOURTH TUESDAY OF EVERY MONTH.
By Dr. John C. Soucy, Jr., M.D.:
We are supposed to be the light of the world, and that means we should allow the Lord to be seen through us. We do not wish to be seen ourselves, but wish for the Lord to be seen through us. It seems to me that this is the real meaning of the Gospel when it says" act in such a way that people who see you may see the work of God and praise God". Not that people may see the Christians but " by means of you, God" ".Therefore the person must not appear, but allow God to be seen through the person"

KNIGHT OF THE MONTH
Our Knight of the Month for January is Tino Garamella. We all know that familiar face with the sailor hat that is always helping out wherever needed. Tino assists with many functions at the Council hall when he can. He also donates much of his time helping out at school. Tino enjoys taking time to read to the kids and just spending time assisting our future, the youth of the church. Give big Congratulations to Tino for Knight of the Month for January!
February's Knight of the Month is Rob Kroupa. After joining the Knight's in 2001, Rob constantly was making himself available to help out when and wherever possible. He has served in the past as a Team Captain and is currently a Trustee and the Chairman for the Lenten fish fries, which we all know is a major responsibility. Rob has always put his heart forward to this Council, trying to make things better for us all. Fellowship has been one of the things Rob has enjoyed most since being a Knight. Thanks to Rob for all that he does and our continued thanks during the Lenten Fish Fries. Congratulations Rob Kroupa!
January's Family of the Month is Jason and Barbara Bolte. With the large responsibility of Financial Secretary, Jason has his hands full. Dues, family information and many countless hours on the phone and computer keep Jason, and Barbara busy. Not only is Jason our Financial Secretary, he is also a team captain and helps out with other committees, including Newsletter, Horseshoe and Night at the Races. Now let's not forget his wife in all of this. Barbara is a member of the Ladies Auxiliary. She also is right by Jason's side working with many projects and constantly taking messages from all of us! Barb we really appreciate the job you do! Thanks to Jason and Barb Bolte again for everything and Congratulations on Family of the Month!
Our Family of the Month for February is Bill and Karen Douglas. Bill joined the Knights in December of 1997. Since joining, he has been involved in many capacities, including Past Deputy Grand Knight under three Grand Knights and currently as Team Captain, Newsletter Committee and Home Association. Bill's wife Karen joined the Ladies Auxiliary in spring of 1998. Karen and Bill work side by side in many functions at the hall including weddings, fish fries and other social events. Thanks to Bill and Karen for all they do and Congratulations!
The Lenten Fish Fry's will begin the first week of March. This is one of our biggest fundraisers, and an annual event that our community has come to depend on. Please do your best to arrange your schedule to make available as much time as possible. Regardless if you are currently assigned to a work crew or not, or if your crew is scheduled to work or not, please come out to help as often as possible. And when your crew is scheduled to work, please allow time for prep, serve and cleanup when possible. In order to make this a continuing success we need “all hands on deck”. Thank you for your efforts.
There will be a horseshoe meeting on Wednesday March 15 at 7:30 to discuss team creation and league rules for the upcoming season. Please come out if you plan on playing this season.
THE LADIES AUXILIARY COLUMN The Ladies Auxilary met on Tuesday, March 14. Jim Wallace, representative of the Wellness Center, was a guest speaker who explained our options for the winning raffle ticket and informed us more on the makeup and services offered at the Wellness Center. After discussion, the Ladies Auxilary made a motion to give the money back to the Wellness Center. Todd Mack presented a Pro-Life billboard picture the Knights are supporting and asked if we would financially assist in paying for a year. The Ladies agreed to pay $3600 to keep the Pro-Life sign up for the second year. We had two new members join the Ladies Auxilary: Kathy Green and Vicki Metze. Welcome Ladies!!! Please introduce yourself and welcome these ladies when you see them.
OUR NEXT MEETING IS TUESDAY MAY 9 th AT 7:30

On the backside of the calendar you will see a picture and below is a testimony by the father of the artist.
Crown of Thorns
During my son's second year at West Point in April 1983, he was hospitalized for several weeks as a result of a severe wrestling injury.
Just before noon on Good Friday, the daily visit of the West Point Chaplain was a welcome relief. He reminded him of Christ's pain and suffering, and of His ultimate gift to us. The Chaplain left, and he was alone again. He reached for his drawing pad and pencils. He began to draw.
Four hours of intense effort slipped by in a moment. He felt his heart open, when suddenly he was staring into the eyes of Jesus Christ – eyes which he had drawn with his pencil, and which now drew him into their power of His love. It was as if He himself had guided his hand and allowed him to see with his own eyes, and feel with his heart, the true significance of His sacrifice.
Mark's experience that day changed his life. We both pray that others will be blessed by His image, which Mark has been blessed by creating, and which I am privileged to distribute .

Some Good Clean Fun

New Drive-thru
T he elderly priest, speaking to the younger priest, said, " I t was a good idea to replace the first four rows of pews with plush bucket theater seats. It worked like a charm. The front of the church always fills first now."
T he young priest nodded, and the old priest continued, "And you told me a little more beat to the music would bring young people back to the church, so I supported you when you brought in that rock 'n roll gospel choir. We are packed to the balcony!!"
" T hank you, Father," answered the young priest. " I am pleased that you are open to the new ideas of youth."
" H owever," said the elderly priest, "I'm afraid you've gone too far with the drive-thru confessional."
" B ut, Father," protested the young priest, "my confessions and the
donations have nearly doubled since I began that!" " I know, son, but that flashing neon sign, Toot 'n Tell or Go To Hell, just can't stay on the church roof!"
The Irishman
A n Irishman walks into a bar and orders three glasses of Guiness, drinking them one at a time. Noticing this odd ritual, the bartender explains that the beer goes flat when poured and informs the man his beer would be much fresher if he ordered one glass at a time.
T he Irishman explains he began this custom with his two brothers, who have moved to America and Australia, respectively. This is their way of remembering all the time they spent drinking together.
T he man becomes a regular at the pub, well-known for always ordering three beers at once. One day he walks in and orders only two beers. Assuming the worst, a hush falls among other patrons.
W hen the Irishman returns to the bar to order his second round, the bartender quietly offers his condolences. The man looks confused for a moment, and then explains, "No, everyone's fine. I gave up beer for lent."
